CO₂ CleanUp is an innovative technology for ‘Direct Air Capture’. This process focuses on the sustainable and efficient removal of CO₂ (carbon dioxide) from the atmosphere. Successfully tested in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, the technology combines energy efficiency with scalability. The result is a permanent reduction of CO₂, which is also known as ‘negative CO₂ emissions’.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that CO₂ removal is an essential means of meeting the 2050 ‘Net Zero’ goal. Countering global temperature rise is crucial to avoid irreversible tipping points with serious climate risks. Direct Air Capture is a widely deployable tool that helps to significantly reduce CO₂ concentrations in the atmosphere.
CO2CLEANUP is a fully circular process, with no emissions or consumption of auxiliary materials. It has low electricity consumption and is fully modular.This makes the technology quick to roll out worldwide. Due to the industrial size of the Alkmaar plant, the energy efficiency, circularity and scalability of the technology, we as SCW are setting a new standard worldwide.
SCW's first Direct Air Capture tower has a capture capacity of 5,000 tonnes of CO₂per year. The CO2 CLEANUP plant in Alkmaar has been successfully tested and the technology is ready for further industrial application. SCW will continue to use the tower for development purposes. The focus is on developing and rolling out systems that can permanently remove gigatons of CO₂ per year all over the world.
